My first trip after moving to China in 2022 was to the very special city of Luoyang in Henan Province. Peonies, grottoes, Tang Dynasty tea ceremonies, Luoyang is a beautiful city on the Yellow River that is must see for anyone wanting to experience the long history of China. Modern day Luoyang has a population of over 2 million people. We would consider this a metropolitan city in the United States but in China it is considered a small city. Regardless of size, this is considered to be where Chinese civilization began and is respected by all.
Henan Province: Where China's History Begins
Henan Province, located in central China, is known as the birthplace of Chinese civilization. With its rich history and vibrant culture, this province offers a glimpse into the country's ancient past. Zhengzhou is the capital of Henan. Nanyang, Luoyang, Shangqiu, Xinyang, and Kaifeng are popular destinations in Henan.
Here are some key details about Henan Province:
Historical Significance
● Henan Province is often referred to as the "cradle of Chinese civilization" due to its central role in the development of Chinese culture and history.
● It was in Henan that the Xia Dynasty, the first dynasty in Chinese history, emerged around 2070 BCE.
● The province also served as the capital for many other important dynasties, including the Shang, Western Zhou, Eastern Zhou, and Han.
● As a result of its historical significance, Henan is home to numerous UNESCO World Heritage Sites, such as the Longmen Grottoes and the Shaolin Temple.
Agriculture and Natural Resources
● Known as the "granary of China," Henan has a strong agricultural sector and is one of the major food-producing regions in the country.
● The province's fertile land and favorable climate make it ideal for cultivating crops like wheat, corn, rice, and cotton.
● Additionally, Henan has abundant mineral resources, including coal, iron ore, aluminum, and gold.
Population and Urbanization
● With a population of over 100 million people, Henan is the most populous province in China.
● Despite its historical significance and large population, Henan remains relatively less urbanized compared to coastal provinces like Shanghai or Guangdong.
● However, cities like Luoyang and Zhengzhou are rapidly developing into modern urban centers with improved infrastructure and amenities.
Henan Cultural Heritage
● Henan Province boasts a diverse cultural heritage with influences from various dynasties and ethnic groups.
● The province is renowned for its traditional arts such as Shaolin Kung Fu, Henan Opera, and the Songshan Fan Dance.
● Visitors to Henan can also immerse themselves in the local customs and traditions, including tea ceremonies, calligraphy, and traditional Chinese medicine
Transportation
Travel to Luoyang
Travel within China is not near as difficult as many would expect. In fact I find it easy to navigate whether alone or with friends and family. Most of the major and many of the smaller cities have their mass transit in both Chinese and English. Using Chinese apps like Wechat, Alipay, DiDi make it easy to book travel and transportation. I also use Trip.com to book my flights and HSR trains. Their app makes it easy with e-tickets. Their are customer service desks at subway and train stations and people designated to help travelers purchase tickets through the automated machines.
Getting To Luoyang
I was easily able to take a High Speed Train to Luoyang from Nanyang. My city is in the southern part of Henan Province while Luoyang is in the northern part of Henan Province. Luoyang is also easily accessible by various modes of transportation from major cities throughout China:
1. Plane: Luoyang has its own airport, Luoyang Beijiao Airport, which connects the city to major domestic destinations such as Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou.
2. Train: The city is well-connected to the national railway network, making it easy to reach Luoyang from other cities in China. High-speed trains provide a comfortable and efficient way to travel, with routes connecting Luoyang to Beijing, Shanghai, Xi'an, and many other cities.
3. High-Speed Rail: The high-speed rail network in China is renowned for its speed and convenience. Luoyang is served by several high-speed rail lines, allowing travelers to reach the city quickly from major hubs like Beijing and Shanghai. I highly recommend the HSR. I typically prefer to fly but after moving to China, I find the HSR to be time and money saving plus it is quite comfortable. You have access to free Wi-Fi, charging stations, USB ports, foot rests, and tray tables. You can even order food from one of the local towns where the train stops and it will be delivered to your cabin when the train arrives, you also can purchase food on the train. They have a cleaning service that keeps the floors, restrooms, and common areas clean throughout your train ride.
Getting Around Luoyang
Once in Luoyang, getting around the city is a breeze thanks to its excellent metro system. Here are some key points about Luoyang's transportation infrastructure:
● Metro System: Luoyang has a modern and efficient metro system with multiple lines that cover the city's main areas. The metro is a convenient option for both locals and tourists alike.
● Buses: In addition to the metro, Luoyang also has an extensive bus network that provides comprehensive coverage of the city. Buses are a cost-effective way to travel within Luoyang and explore its various attractions.
● Taxis: Taxis are readily available in Luoyang and offer a convenient means of transportation for those who prefer door-to-door service. Taxis can be hailed on the street or booked through mobile apps. You can use translation apps to speak with drivers.
● Shared Bikes: Like many cities in China, Luoyang has embraced the trend of shared bikes. These bikes can be rented through mobile apps and are a popular choice for short-distance travel within the city.
When using public transportation in Luoyang, you can expect a safe and clean environment. The metro, buses, and trains are well-maintained, making them a reliable option for getting around. Even if you don't speak Chinese, navigating the transportation system is easy thanks to English options on ticket machines and bilingual information displayed on scroll bars and voice overs.
Historical Significance of Luoyang
Renowned for its rich and significant history, Luoyang holds a special place in the heart of Chinese culture. Luoyang boasts a rich history that dates back thousands of years. It was once the capital of multiple dynasties, including the Eastern Zhou, Han, and Tang dynasties. The city's historical importance is evident in its many ancient ruins and cultural relics, such as the Longmen Grottoes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring thousands of Buddhist statues carved into limestone cliffs.

Luoyang's title as the capital of 13 dynasties highlights its historical importance.
These dynasties include:
1. Eastern Zhou Dynasty: The Eastern Zhou Dynasty was one of the longest-ruling dynasties in Chinese history and played a crucial role in shaping Luoyang's early development as a political and cultural center.
2. Eastern Han Dynasty: During the Eastern Han Dynasty, Luoyang became the capital of China for over four centuries. This period witnessed significant advancements in agriculture, technology, and arts, leaving behind a rich cultural legacy.
3. Cao Wei Dynasty: The Cao Wei Dynasty was one of the three kingdoms during the Three Kingdoms period. Luoyang served as its capital, and it was during this time that the famous novel "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" took place.

9. Tang Dynasty: The Tang Dynasty is often regarded as the golden age of Chinese civilization. Luoyang, as the eastern capital, witnessed unprecedented prosperity, artistic achievements, and cultural exchange during this period.
10. Later Liang Dynasty: The Later Liang Dynasty was one of the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period. Although its reign was relatively short-lived, it left behind some architectural remains that showcase the architectural style of the time.
11. Later Tang Dynasty: The Later Tang Dynasty ruled over Luoyang briefly but made significant contributions to the city's development, particularly in terms of infrastructure and governance.

Exploring Luoyang
The city is beautiful and the people are kind. It is a small city just east of the capital city of Zhengzhou. When visiting Luoyang, it is recommended to explore these historical sites to fully immerse yourself in the city's rich history.
Here are some tips for making the most of your visit:
Plan your itinerary: With so many historical sites to visit, it is essential to plan your itinerary in advance. Research each site and prioritize based on your interests and time constraints.
Important Note: Many tourist sites will need you to scan a QR Code using Wechat app. This is how you will reserve and purchase your tickets. Many need to be reserved in advance. You will show your passport and your e-ticket which is often a QR Code they will scan at the entrance gate. Some places have a ticket counter but many do not. Plan ahead. Also, some locations do not have the ability to reserve tickets with a passport. You must have a National ID card which only Chinese citizens have. So in those situations you need either a Chinese friend to purchase for you or you must go through a tour agency. Longmen Grottos is the only place I visited in Luoyang where I had to have my friends purchase my ticket.
Engage with local guides: To gain deeper insights into the historical significance of each site, consider hiring a local guide who can provide valuable information and anecdotes. This is different that a tour group which is always an option. I have worked with local guides who gave me one on one experiences of important cultural places such as the Terracotta Warriors in Xi'an and The Palace Museum/Forbidden City in Beijing.
Shop off the Beaten Path: I love to shop and discover local artisans in the new destinations. I encourage you to not shop in the tourist areas. Often the prices will be inflated and quality is not near as high as when you find shops even just a block or two away. I love to explore tea shops and sit down with the owner and enjoy a cup of tea. Or a seamstress shop wear they hand make beautiful dresses and will custom fit to you on the spot. I have had dresses delivered to my hotel or teapots sent to my home. Customer service and pride in their products and skills is on full display. You will be glad you found these hidden gems and have stories to tell when you return home.
Experience cultural activities: In addition to visiting historical sites, take the opportunity to engage in cultural activities such as traditional Chinese calligraphy or tea ceremonies. These experiences will enhance your understanding of Luoyang's cultural heritage.
Try local cuisine: While exploring Luoyang, don't miss the chance to savor its unique culinary delights. Sample local dishes such as Water Banquet (Shui Xi), Guan Tang Baozi (steamed buns), and Luoyang Soup Noodles. Snack streets near Lijing Gate is a must! See people dressed in Tang Dynasty Hanfu, try local snack foods, and shop the local shops.
Immerse yourself in Luoyang's rich history and culture, you can gain a deeper appreciation for this city's significant contributions to China's past and present.

Luoyang is home to numerous important historical sites that provide valuable insights into the city's past. These sites are not only significant to Luoyang but also hold great importance for Chinese history as a whole. China has 57 UNESCO World Heritage sites. Luoyang is home to one of those.

Bai Ma Si- White Horse Temple: As one of the oldest Buddhist temples in China, Bai Ma Si holds great cultural and religious significance. Its tranquil atmosphere and beautiful architecture make it a must-visit for those interested in Buddhism.
Longmen Grottoes: These ancient caves are home to thousands of intricate Buddhist carvings, showcasing the exceptional craftsmanship of ancient Chinese artisans. The Longmen Grottoes are a UNESCO World Heritage site and provide an immersive experience into the country's artistic heritage.
Luoyang Old City: Step back in time as you explore the narrow streets and traditional architecture of Luoyang Old City. This well-preserved area offers a glimpse into the city's past, with its charming shops, temples, and historic homes.
Lijing Gate: Known as the "Gate of Luoyang," Lijing Gate is an iconic landmark that once served as the main entrance to the city during ancient times. It stands as a testament to Luoyang's historical importance and architectural beauty.
Palace Tea Show: Immerse yourself in Chinese tea culture at the Palace Tea Show, where you can witness traditional tea ceremonies and taste a variety of high-quality teas. This cultural experience offers insights into Luoyang's tea heritage.
Luoyang Museum: For history enthusiasts, a visit to Luoyang Museum is a must. It houses an impressive collection of artifacts from various dynasties, giving visitors a comprehensive understanding of the city's historical significance.
Luoyang-Hometown of Wang Yibo
Being a fan of the multi-talented Chinese star Wang Yibo, I couldn't resist visiting his hometown of Luoyang. After watching the television show "Luoyang," which starred Wang Yibo, I was eager to see the city that had captivated him. I even paid a visit to his middle school. I highly recommend "Luoyang" which can be seen on Iqiyi. If you are not aware of this talented man, I encourage you to learn more. He is an award winning professional dancer (see Youku Street Dance China Season 3-5). Award winning Actor in television and film(He has shows on Tencent, Youku, Iqiyi and other platforms). Award winning singer. Champion motorcycle racer, skateboarder, supermodel, global ambassador for Chanel, Lacoste, and many other brands and also a philanthorpist who gives of his own time, money to various causes. Living in Henan Province, I can tell you he is highly respected for his work ethic, his talent but most importantly his kindness and humility.
A Memorable Stay at Christian Hotel
During my trip, I stayed at the Christian's Hotel, which turned out to be one of the most beautiful hotels I have ever experienced. The hotel staff were incredibly thoughtful and helpful, going above and beyond to make my stay comfortable and enjoyable. At the reception desk they had staff that could speak English. They gave me a cup of hot tea and told me they were sending a complimentary welcome meal to my room since I had been traveling all day. The meal was delicious and just what I needed. They even placed a China and American flag in my room as a kind and welcoming gesture.
The hotel's high-rise dining room provided a breathtaking view of downtown Luoyang while indulging in delicious cuisine. As an American living in China, having a luxurious bathtub in my room was a special treat since most apartments only have showers. Christian's Hotel exceeded my expectations with its beautifully decorated rooms, cozy beds, and stunning city skyline views.
Every detail was meticulously taken care of, from the plush bathrobes to the high-quality toiletries. The hotel's commitment to providing exceptional service created a truly memorable experience. I can't wait to visit Luoyang again and relish in their unparalleled hospitality at Christian's Hotel.
Luoyang Cuisine
Unlike cities to the south like Chongqing or Chengdu, people from Luoyang do not tend to eat spicy food. But Luoyang is known for many famous dishes and the food is delicious. Some must-try dishes include Luoyang Water Banquet, which features a variety of delicacies cooked in different broths, and Shaqima, a traditional sweet snack.
Luoyang and Peonies
The city is also famous for its peonies, and during the Peony Festival in April, the streets are adorned with vibrant blooms. One can explore the breathtaking Peony Garden, where thousands of peony flowers in different colors and varieties create a stunning display. The festival also offers cultural performances, art exhibitions, and traditional craft demonstrations, providing a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in the rich heritage of Luoyang.
Shaolin Temple
Another popular attraction near Luoyang is the Shaolin Temple, which is located in nearby Dengfeng. This ancient Buddhist temple is renowned for its association with martial arts and the birthplace of Zen Buddhism. Visitors can witness awe-inspiring kung fu demonstrations by skilled monks and even participate in training sessions to experience the discipline and spirituality that permeate this sacred place.
Luoyang is a Treasure of Culture and History Waiting To Be Explored!
With its blend of history, culture, natural beauty, and warm hospitality, Luoyang offers a truly enriching travel experience that leaves a lasting impression on visitors." Another attraction worth visiting is the Guanlin Temple, dedicated to Guan Yu, a famous general from the Three Kingdoms period. Whether you're a history enthusiast, a food lover, or simply seeking a charming city to explore, Luoyang offers a delightful mix of culture and beauty.
